Sales decline at Michigan pot shops after recent surge

WEDNESDAY, April 1 — Following one of the most profitable weeks ever for Michigan’s legal marijuana industry last month, pot shops across the state watched sales plunge last week.

According to figures released today by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, sales of recreational marijuana decreased by more than 20% statewide from March 23-29, down from a record-high weekly revenue of $5.78 million tracked from March 16-22.

Statewide medical marijuana sales, similarly, dipped by about 25% to $5.92 million last week.

The decrease in sales aligns with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s latest executive order to temporarily shutter many nonessential businesses across the state. In Michigan, both medical and recreational pot shops were forced to close in-store operations for curbside pickup and delivery.

Business, at least at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, was booming. Records showed recreational sales spiked by over $1 million in the week that followed Whitmer’s announcement of the first two confirmed coronavirus cases in Michigan. They dropped back down last week.

Sam Usman Jr., owner of PG Group, which operates a string of dispensaries including Stateside Wellness, Old 27 Wellness and Pure Options in Lansing, told City Pulse last month that he expected his newly increased sales to level off with the recent switch to curbside sales.
