Weekend events to beat the cold

While there won’t be a reprieve from freezing temperatures and icy conditions this weekend, the Lansing area is prepared with a long list of indoor events, including art exhibitions, concerts, dance parties, musicals, a comedy show, a farmers market and more.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have cover band North of Five at Harrison Roadhouse at 6; round three of Q106’s “Homegrown Throwdown” battle of the bands contest Grewal Hall at 224 at 7; dancer Nic Gareiss, fiddler Liz Carroll and banjoist Allison de Groot at University United Methodist Church at 7:30; a solo acoustic performance by Matt Carlson of the Stick Arounds and Harborcoat at the Peanut Barrel at 8; and hip-hop, R&B, jazz and soul cover group the Corzo Effect at the Green Door at 8:30. Saturday evening, we have blues, country and jazz group the Further Adventures of FatBoy and JiveTurkey at UrbanBeat, the bimonthly A Night at the Soul Lounge at the Avenue and rock bands Ten Peso Version, Moscow Mexico and Space Lady and the Witch at Mac’s Bar, all at 8, and emo and pop-punk cover band PTxD at the Green Door at 8:30. Ending the weekend on Sunday is a performance by the Lansing Symphony Orchestra’s piano quartet at the First Presbyterian Church of Lansing’s Molly Grove Chapel at 3 p.m. and Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m.

If you’re in the mood to dance, the Ten Pound Fiddle will hold its biweekly Contra & Square Dance 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church; UrbanBeat is hosting a pajama dance party 8 p.m. Saturday, with music by DJ Whitney Who; and DJs from Emo Night Brooklyn will spin emo and pop-punk hits from the early 2000s 8 p.m. Saturday at Grewal Hall at 224.

The Michigan State University Broad Art Museum is hosting a guided tour of “As we dwell in the fold,” by Peruvian artist Andrea Canepa, 1 p.m. Sunday. The exhibition, which closes Sunday, “explores what it means to hide oneself from the gaze of others and how fabrics shape the way we relate to who we are,” according to the museum’s website. While you’re at the museum, make sure to check out the other exhibitions on display, including “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection,” “Resistance Training: Arts, Sports, and Civil Rights” and the 2024 Art, Art History and Design Faculty Triennial, which opens Saturday.

Other art displays on view this weekend include “Colors of Celebration: An Artistic Tribute to Global Holidays” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday; “Space Between,” by Gerald Collins, at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; local artist Jules Vander Galien’s landscape paintings at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday; and “Layers,” by Robert Park, at Struk Studio in north Lansing, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

If you’re feeling crafty, adults can make snowman salt and pepper shakers at the Charlotte Community Library 5:30 p.m. Friday, and MSU students can make mood boards at the Broad Art Museum 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Lansing theater group Evolve Theatrics’ production of “Chicago” opens at the First Christian Church of Lansing this weekend, with performances 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Additionally, the North American tour of “Mamma Mia!” wraps up its run at the Wharton Center 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, and Ruhala Performing Arts Center is producing a new musical about individual choices, “Where Am I Going?”, 7 p.m. Saturday.

AL!VE, a health park in Charlotte, will host its weekly story time and parkour workshop 10 a.m. Friday for children ages 2 to 6 and their caregivers. Also at 10 a.m. Friday, REACH Studio Art Center continues its four-week Storytime for Tots class, and Impression 5 Science Center will host its weekly Sparking Science workshop for ages 2 to 4 at 10 a.m. both Friday and Saturday. This week’s theme is “Frozen Science.”

The touring “The Future of Comedy Show” is back at Spare Time Entertainment Center 7 p.m. Friday, featuring comedians Mike Ball, Big Juicy, Dave Wellfare and Steve Kaz.

Mason’s Looking Glass Brewing Co. is hosting prohibition-themed speakeasy parties 5 and 8 p.m. Friday, featuring live music, moonshine cocktails and a chance to dress up in your ‘20s best.

The Meridian Township Farmers Market’s biweekly winter market runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the JCPenney wing of the Meridian Mall. Vendors will be selling produce, baked goods, body products, crafts, prepared food and much more.

Visit the Marketplace on the Green in Okemos 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday for an ice-skating party, with free skate rentals, a pajama contest, music, games and hot chocolate.

Finally, the Hunter Park GardenHouse will host a beginner seed-saving class 10 a.m. Saturday, focusing on tomatoes, peppers, beans and squash as well as some flowers and herbs.
