Strange Matter Coffee closes shop in downtown Lansing

Owner cites 68% reduction in downtown foot traffic amid pandemic

TUESDAY, Aug. 25 — Strange Matter Coffee & Bakery has closed its downtown Lansing location until either a COVID-19 vaccine is discovered or a more profitable use can be found for the space.

The popular coffee chain announced this week it would cease all operations at its shop on Washington Square but will continue to operate its eastside location, 2101 E. Michigan Ave. The move is a direct result of decreased foot traffic amid the pandemic, said owner Cara Nader.

“At the end of the day, it’s just not sustainable in Downtown Lansing for us at the moment,” Nader said in a press release yesterday. “This isn’t the fault of anyone other than a virus, but a sensical national mask policy and testing strategy would have gone a long way.”

Strange Matter cited a 68% reduction in foot traffic downtown compared to this time last year. Michigan Avenue, by comparison, has only seen a 35% decrease in foot traffic, Nader said. As a result, several businesses across Lansing have closed in recent months — some indefinitely.

“Please continue to support local businesses. Food service establishments have been particularly hard hit and will continue to be until there is a vaccine,” the press release stated.

Those looking to support Strange Matter Coffee & Bakery can still visit the Michigan Avenue location, purchase online gift cards or order their bottled beverages for pickup and delivery. Preorders for bottled drinks are accepted on Mondays and Tuesdays for pickups or deliveries on Thursdays and Fridays. Visit strangemattercoffee.com for more details or to place an order.
