Spooky season is here

As we head toward Halloween, this weekend offers a handful of haunting events, such as Halloween soirees, Potter Park’s Boo at the Zoo and a Halloween-themed cruise-in, plus an experimental film screening, art workshops, a fashion festival, a roller derby tournament, a 5K and much more. 

For Friday evening’s live music, we have the Novak Trio at Michigan State University’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at 5:30; North of Five at Harrison Roadhouse at 6; Great Scott! at Lansing Brewing Co. and Whorled at UrbanBeat, both at 7; Annie Capps and a Band of Badass Women at University United Methodist Church at 7:30; Aaron Johnson at The Peanut Barrel at 8; and the Corzo Effect at The Green Door at 8:30. Saturday evening, we have Kommuna Lux at UrbanBeat at 7, the Teddy Bear Orchestra at Mac’s Bar at 8 and the Louderthans at The Green Door at 8:30. Ending the weekend on Sunday are the Lansing Symphony Orchestra’s Brass Quintet at the First Presbyterian Church of Lansing’s Molly Grove Chapel at 3 p.m. and Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m.

The MSU Broad Art Museum is hosting a screening of the experimental documentary “Machines in Flames” 7 p.m. Friday at Wells Hall. The event is inspired by themes in “Shouldn’t You Be Working? 100 Years of Working from Home” and includes a Q&A with filmmaker Andrew Culp and MSU associate professor Zach Kaiser.

Art displays on view this weekend include “Shouldn’t You Be Working? 100 Years of Working from Home,” “As we dwell in the fold,” “Resistance Training: Arts, Sports, and Civil Rights,” “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” and “Beal Botanical Garden: Celebrating 150 Years of People, Plants, and Place” at the Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday; the Shiawassee Artists’ Guild’s “Potpourri” exhibition at Framer’s Edge in Okemos, which is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday; “Wholly Integrated” and “We Are Survivors” at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; the Mid-Michigan Art Guild’s Fall Member Art Show at the Neighborhood Empowerment Center, which is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; the Mid-Michigan Art Guild’s Small Works Art Exhibit at the Haslett Library, which is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday; Chance Liscomb’s “Where ART Thou?? Playful Reflections on Religion and Scripture” at The Peoples Church of East Lansing, which is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday; and impressionistic Michoacan landscape paintings by Mexican artist Jaime Vanegas Castro and a collection of calaveras, whimsical art figures of skeletons joyously living life, made by Michigan-based Hispanic and Latinx artists at Casa de Rosado Galeria & Cultural Center, which is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

If you’d like to make some art of your own, REACH Studio Art Center is hosting a life drawing class 6 p.m. Friday, local artist Steph Joy Hogan is teaching a mixed-media workshop 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lansing Art Gallery, and Casa de Rosado is offering drop-in sugar-skull-decorating workshops 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

For theater buffs, “Isaac’s Eye” wraps up at Lansing Community College’s Black Box Theatre 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and “Clue” wraps up at the Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, “On the Market” continues at the Williamston Theatre 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Pre-Halloween events this weekend include The Graveyard Shift Cruise-In 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at R.E. Olds Transportation Museum, Dark Art of Michigan Halloween Soirees beginning 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at The Avenue, Potter Park Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo events noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and chances to meet Douglas Tait, who has played numerous roles in horror movies, including Jason Voorhees in “Freddy vs. Jason,” 7 to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday at Awaken Haunted Attraction in Leslie.

Sports fans can view a host of roller derby tournaments at the 10^th annual Mitten Kitten Mash-Up, beginning 10 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Lansing Center, as well as a series of Capital Pro Wrestling matches beginning 3 p.m. Saturday at The Fledge.

If you’re looking to get up and moving yourself, Eaton County Parks and Recreation is hosting its annual Timber Trails 5K 9 a.m. Saturday at Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge. Proceeds benefit trail development in Eaton County parks.

Registration for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support and research, begins 11 a.m. Saturday at the Michigan State Capitol. The ceremony begins at 12:30, followed by the walk.

The Capitol City Quilt Guild is hosting a quilt show 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Ingham County Fairgrounds, featuring more than 275 quilts on display as well as door prizes, raffles, a silent auction and additional vendors. Color the flyer on the website and bring it to the event for $1 off admission.

The Salus Center is holding a clothing swap 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, where attendees can pick up or donate fall and winter clothing and Halloween costumes. There will also be free snacks and a photo booth.

Wacousta-Dewitt Masonic Lodge’s first fundraiser fish fry of the season runs 4 to 6:30 p.m. Friday or until food runs out. If you’re in the mood for dessert afterward, there will be a bake sale on the lodge’s main floor.

Visit Everybody Reads bookstore 4 p.m. Saturday for “Bittersweet: A Reading for Recovery, Resilience & Remembrance,” a program focusing on recovering from a range of experiences, including substance abuse disorder. There will be poetry and prose readings, visual art, photos by Roxanne Frith and more.

Impression 5 Science Center’s Design & Build Day runs 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, featuring hands-on activities led by professional plumbers, electricians, landscapers and roofing contractors, allowing children to explore the science of skilled trades and home building.

The Old Town Commercial Association is celebrating more than 25 years of dedication to developing and promoting Old Town at its Silver Gala 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at R.E. Olds Transportation Museum. There will be music, food, art, an auction and more. Cocktail attire is encouraged.

The biannual Beerfest at the Ballpark returns 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Field, giving attendees ages 21 and up an opportunity to sample more than 100 craft beers from more than 30 Michigan Breweries in addition to ciders, hard seltzers, meads, wines and spirits. There will also be live music by Scotty Karate, Shelby & Jake, the Five ‘N’ Dime Poets and JP & the Energy as well as food trucks, local vendors, a free cornhole tournament with prizes and more.

Harris Nature Center is hosting a Wine in the Woods event 7 p.m. Saturday for ages 21 and up. Attendees can bring their favorite wine or other beverages and enjoy a guided walk through the woods, followed by a campfire with gourmet s’mores.

Visit the area of Grove Street in front of Woven Art Yarn Shop in East Lansing 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday for the From Fiber to Fashion Festival, featuring demonstrations of block printing, hand quilting, ice dying and more as well as booths from a variety of local fiber artists, who will be showcasing and selling their work.

Local authors Dedria Humphries Barker and Veronica Wilkerson Johnson will hold a book signing and Q&A 2 p.m. Sunday at Hooked bookstore. Beverages will be available for purchase.

Finally, the East Lansing Farmers Market’s Autumn Fest runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Valley Court Park. On top of shopping, attendees can enjoy yard games, a petting zoo, pony rides and more.
