Song of the day: Rites of Gaia | 'Young Ones'

Rooted in Lansing’s DIY music culture, Rites of Gaia pays homage to down-in-the-ground punk rock. Frontman Rael Jordan recorded “Young Ones” in 2014, back when all he had was a Tascam, a drum kit and a few guitars. Fans of ’80s underground rock cavaliers such as The Wipers and Meat Puppets can appreciate Rites of Gaia’s raw chord progressions and bedroom recording setup. The track is suitable for the soundtrack of a misunderstood outsider’s reluctant first day of school — in fact, Jordan’s vocals could’ve easily been recorded from the back of the class. Last year, Jordan was joined by drummer Dave Shilakes and bassist Char Keyes. Jordan said the new medley of musicians creates a “post-surf” feeling that walks the peripheries of ’80s punk, garage and surf rock. They will perform new songs from their upcoming EP Friday at The Avenue Café.
