Thursday, Nov. 29 — Tonight/poetry will take flight/with two teams of students who are bright. /Their words will ignite/and soar like a kite/dropping rhymes that are tight/to excite/and enlighten/the audience like Turkish Delight.
You get the idea, right? (OK, we’ll stop.) The poets at tonight’s MSU Slam Showcase will likely lay down some better work than that. The event is billed as “the end of the semester hurrah,” says Stephanie Glazier, assistant director for the Residential College of Arts and Humanities at Michigan State University, which is hosting the event.
“This is made up entirely of students, which makes it really stand out from other poetry events,” Glazier said. “These poets have a lot of energy. This is going to make for a very interesting show.”
Glazier said the event isn’t a true poetry slam, in that it’s not a competition. At a true slam, poets recite original works that are judged by the audience. This showcase will feature members of both the MSU Slam Team and the MSU Black Poets Society.
“These two groups have never met on our stage before,” Glazier said. “It’s going to be candy for the ears.”
If you can’t make it tonight, the final slam of the semester will be Dec. 6 at (SCENE) Metrospace in East Lansing.
