Peppermint Creek announces 2020-2021 season

TUESDAY, Sept. 29 — In lieu of a traditional season, Peppermint Creek Theatre Co. is offering four unique free events that will highlight marginalized voices and groups in America. The series of theatrical events is titled “The Voices Project.”

“How do marginalized voices from America's history impact us today? What stories do the black and brown individuals of Lansing have to tell us?” A press release from Peppermint Creek Theatre Co. reads. “What are we still learning from individuals kept in concentration camps during the Holocaust? And what state is our educational system in, pre and post-COVID?”

Artistic director Chad Swan-Badgero said The Voices Project will “not only challenge our audiences to engage in some timely and thorny topics, but it's also going to challenge us as a theatre company as we explore new and radical ways to connect with audiences.”

The first of the four productions, titled “Hear Our Cry,” will run from Oct. 22 to Oct. 24. “Hear Our Cry” will bring the audience to a classic drive-in movie set-up in downtown Lansing for a film “created both centuries ago and yesterday.” Lansing community members submitted texts from diverse historical American voices and coupled them with responses from modern authors. Peppermint Creek then filmed actors reciting the texts, which will provoke audience members to ask themselves what it means to be American.
