Outdoor hoop-dancing class comes to Patriarche Park

Posted

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 19 — Since the COVID-19 outbreak made it unsafe to gather indoors, many people have been looking for ways to have fun outside. Local hoop-dancer and fire-spinner Nat Spinz is contributing to the cause with her outdoor hoop-dancing class, which takes place this Saturday in East Lansing’s Patriarche Park, past the baseball field near the playhouse.

Hoop dancing is an intense, more artistic version of the classic childhood activity we all know. On her website, Spinz describes hoop dancing as both meditative and challenging.  Spinz used to teach weekly adult hoop dancing classes at the Cedar Street Art Collective, but the pandemic forced her to take the classes outdoors.

Spinz will provide sanitized hula-hoops for any attendees who need one. She noted that hula-hoops from the toy department at big box stores won’t work for your typical adult because they are too light and small.  She is also offering several brand new hula-hoops up for sale in case attendees of the event want to continue to enjoy some hula-hooping fun at home. Each costs twenty dollars. Spinz accepts cash, card and PayPal.

The class is intended for adults, but children are also welcome to participate.
