MSU radio station advances in MTV contest

Posted

Thursday, Feb. 28 — WDBM-FM was named “College Radio Station of the Year” 11 times by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, and snagged City Pulse's Top of the Town award last year for “Best Radio Station.” Now it’s less than a month away from potentially adding a national trophy to the collection.

Michigan State University-based WDBM (88.9 The Impact) was recently voted in the top 10 best college radio stations at this year’s mtvU Woodie Awards. The Woodies is an annual award show hosted by MTV's college channel, with topics relevant to the college music scene. Awards are given in categories including best new artist, best college musician and best college radio station. WDBM was one of 25 stations to be nominated for the category before making it into the top 10 in a popular vote contest that ended last week.

The top four winners will be announced on March 17 at the SXSW festival in Austin, after which a judging team will determine who wins. Sam Riddle, WDBM’s marketing director, said the station is catching a lot of attention with its promotional video. Riddle says that the station has more videos in the works.

Voting for the top 10 continues through March 14. To vote, go to ratemyprofessors.com. No login or signup is required, and voting is unlimited. Riddle, in fact, said he cast several voices as he was being interviewed.
