Michigan State University’s College of Music honors Chopin Thursday in the first of eight concerts dedicated to famous composers.
“Two Hundred Years of Chopin” will showcase the West Circle Players — made up of award-winning pianists Panayis Lyras, Deborah Moriarty, Alan Nathan, Derek Polischuk, Minsoo Sohn, George Vatchnadze and Ralph Votapek — who will perform as soloists and as part of mixed chamber groups. A lecture by Carol Hess will precede the concert at 6:45 p.m.
Other upcoming events in the series include “Schumann Celebration” on Nov. 11, “Happy Birthday Mozart” on Jan. 27 and “Everything Beethoven” on Feb. 24.
“We’re starting a tradition," said James Forger, dean of the College of Music at MSU. "One common thing in all of these concerts is that there are multiple performers with a great variety. While it highlights partly the composers, it also brings a wide variety of artists.”
