Halloween is here

There is a plethora of Halloween events this weekend to get you in the spooky spirit before Tuesday, as well as a few theater productions, an Alternative Holiday Gift Fair & Bake Sale, a World Lemur Day celebration, a euchre tournament, a silent auction and more.

For Friday evening’s live music, we have Aaron Johnson at Harrison Roadhouse at 6, gospel groups Anthem Edition and Endless Highway at South Church at 7, acoustic duos The Dangling Participles and Dave & Kristi at University United Methodist Church at 7:30, cover duo Something with James at The Peanut Barrel and Michigan State University’s Wind Symphony and Symphony Band with guest composer Gabriela Ortiz at the Wharton Center’s Cobb Great Hall, both at 8; and Mix Pack at The Green Door at 8:30. Saturday evening, we have Shelby & Jake at Lansing Brewing Co. at 7, MSU’s University Chorale and State Singers at the Fairchild Theatre at 8 and Frog & the Beeftones at The Green Door at 8:30. Ending the weekend on Sunday is men’s choir Men of Orpheus at Central United Methodist Church and MSU’s Symphony Orchestra with guest composer Ortiz at Cobb Great Hall, both at 3 p.m., and Red Cedar Spirits’ weekly Sunday Jazz show at 6 p.m.

Art displays on view this weekend include the Shiawassee Artists’ Guild’s “Potpourri” exhibition at Framer’s Edge in Okemos, which is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; “We Are Survivors” at the Lansing Art Gallery, which is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; the Mid-Michigan Art Guild’s Fall Member Art Show at the Neighborhood Empowerment Center, which is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; the Mid-Michigan Art Guild’s Small Works Art Exhibit at the Haslett Library, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday; “Shouldn’t You Be Working? 100 Years of Working from Home,” “As we dwell in the fold,” “Resistance Training: Arts, Sports, and Civil Rights,” “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection” and “Beal Botanical Garden: Celebrating 150 Years of People, Plants, and Place” at the MSU Broad Art Museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday; Chance Liscomb’s “Where ART Thou?? Playful Reflections on Religion and Scripture” at The Peoples Church of East Lansing, which is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday; and impressionistic Michoacan landscape paintings by Mexican artist Jaime Vanegas Castro and a collection of calaveras, whimsical art figures of skeletons joyously living life, made by Michigan-based Hispanic and Latinx artists at Casa de Rosado Galeria & Cultural Center, which is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

If you’d like to make some art of your own, REACH Studio Art Center is hosting a life drawing class 6 p.m. Friday and the first session of a two-part abstract watercolor painting workshop 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and Casa de Rosado is offering drop-in sugar-skull-decorating workshops 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

“The Rocky Horror Show” wraps up at Riverwalk Theatre this weekend, with final performances 8 p.m. and midnight Friday and Saturday. Additionally, Audio Air Force presents the radio version of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” as well as two additional audio plays written by members 7 p.m. Friday at East Lansing’s Hannah Community Center, and The Acting Company brings its woman-focused rendition of Homer’s “The Odyssey” to the Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Potter Park Zoo is celebrating World Lemur Day 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Visitors can watch the zoo’s lemurs play with special enrichment activities and learn all about the animals and how to protect them at conservation tables.

Henderson-Hughes Health Partners’ 6^th annual Community Health Event, running 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Foster Community Center, offers free health information and screenings, flu and COVID vaccines, vendors, giveaways, kids’ activities and more.

If you’re looking to get some holiday shopping done early, Grace United Methodist Church’s Alternative Holiday Gift Fair & Bake Sale, running 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, features Fair Trade jewelry, scarves, linens, knits and other crafts made by survivors of abuse and human trafficking as well as artisans from less developed countries. Proceeds from the bake sale will benefit a local food pantry.

Hannah’s House, a Christian maternity shelter in Lansing, is hosting a silent auction fundraiser 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Church. Attendees can also enjoy desserts from various countries.

The Fledge is celebrating October’s full moon, called the hunter’s moon, 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday with a full moon ritual, drum circle and community potluck, plus live music, vendors and art activities.

The Peanut Barrel is hosting a euchre tournament 6 p.m. Sunday. All skill levels are welcome, and Long Island iced teas will be available for half price.

Finally, from a 5K race and a half-mile jack-o’-lantern walk to an ‘80s-themed costume party and a bar crawl, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate Halloween a little early this weekend. For a full list, check out our Halloween event coverage.
