Some say there’s nothing to do in Lansing, but this year’s schedule of summer …
Finding Petoskey stones is not limited to the shores of Lake Michigan, although that is where I first developed a practiced eye in finding them beginning as a kid on summer vacation from school ca 1965. My family spent the summers of the 60s-70s in the small resort city of Frankfort about 15 miles south of the Sleeping Bear Dunes/Empire and only about a block and a half away from the big lake in what originally was a farmhouse built during the Civil War era.
I have found Petoskeys as far south as Stoney Creek Metropark near Washington MI, and also on the shores of Lake Huron, although they were not as "plentiful" and very difficult to find, unlike for me as they were on Lake Michigan. I have also found some on wet gravel road midstate, but those may have been the result of being transported as gravel "filler".
