I ate out a lot in 2024, but I still managed to miss out on several noteworthy spots in our local dining scene. Across social media platforms, I saw pictures and read drool-worthy reviews of dishes from some established eateries and some newcomers that I just didn’t get around to trying despite having added them to my master list in my notes app. Here’s what’s top priority to eat in 2025:
Golden Fish & Chips
2305 W. Grand River Ave., Okemos
Located next to Playmakers in Okemos, Lotte Market is an Asian grocery store that hides a special secret: a fish and chips shop. Being that food joints inside markets almost never disappoint, I’m excited to try the titular dish as well as the ramen and the Korean options. Fish and chips dipped in a side of tteokbokki sounds pretty epic. Another must-try in this category is Kilkenny’s Irish Fish ‘n Chip, a food truck that pulls up at Horrocks once a month. I’d recommend following its Facebook page, where it posts monthly event schedules.
Vietnamese food at St. Andrew Dung-Lac Church
1611 W. Oakland Ave., Lansing
One of the more compelling things I’ve come across is multiple mentions of a local church selling what looks like incredibly fresh and lovingly made Vietnamese food out of its basement. From what I’ve gathered with my sleuthing skills, food sales run from 9 to 11 a.m. and 12:15 to 1 p.m. every other Sunday. (According to the schedule, the next one should be Jan. 5, but keep an eye on the church’s Facebook page for exact details.) Is it an extremely narrow window? Yes. Is it worth it? I’m convinced.
King Subs
2602 N. Grand River Ave., Lansing
I work at a different sandwich restaurant, so maybe this is controversial of me, but I’ve heard nothing but great things about King Subs. It boasts fresh bread that’s baked in-house, and that alone sounds worth the visit. I think I’ll try the pastrami sub, a meat I’m not sure many other local sandwich shops offer. Another need-to-try sandwich spot on the list is the Hummingbird, located in the little black building by Lansing Brewing Co., for its smoked salmon, egg and Boursin on marbled rye.
Snakzilla
2021 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing
Operating out of the Ruckus Ramen kitchen from 5 to 10 p.m. every Sunday, Snakzilla offers creative takes on the traditional taco, with ever-rotating and often brand-new options like pierogi and French onion dip. I’m seriously hoping the latter pops up again!
My New Year’s resolution is to be more intrepid in my dining pursuits, trying as many new things as possible, resisting the pull of old favorites and making a point of visiting spots that are only available to those who pay close attention.
