Today in Lansing: Black Voters Matter

THURSDAY, AUG. 1 — The advocacy group Black Voters Matter will be in Lansing today as part of their “Can't Stop, Won't Stop Tour.” For its Lansing visit, the group has partnered with local organizations to facilitate an intergenerational discussion with the aim to empower black voters.  

The event is hosted by One Love Global and the Lansing chapter of Black Lives Matter. Starting at 3 p.m., there will be a healing circle at the Malcolm X childhood home historical marker, located at 4705 S. Martin Luther King Blvd. The discussion will directly follow at the One Love Global offices on Holmes Street.  

Black Voters Matter is a national nonprofit with a mission to increase voter registration in minority populations, assist in candidate development and advocate for voting rights, among other things. Recently, the group completed a southern tour, including Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana. In 2017, Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., credited the group with contributing to the outpouring of black voters that lifted him to election, the first Democrat to win in Alabama since 1990. 

As the Facebook event mentions, this discussion is open to anyone “who believes the Black community deserves power” and people who work “to strengthen our community.” Light refreshments will be provided.
