This weekend’s event forecast in Greater Lansing

FRIDAY, Sept. 20 — Mural reveals, mobiles and a metaphysics fair are just the basic elements of this weekend’s events medley. Catching the coattails of summer, this weekend is brimming with outdoor events flashing generational appeal and cultural gems.  

The following list includes a handful of entertainments occurring in Lansing this weekend. 

Friday Sept. 20 >> BELOW THE STACKS PRESENTS REO BLOCK PARTY 

This artsy slice of town can’t stop partying. Riding the glow from last weekend’s Art Attack, this free event celebrates the sixth day of Below The Stacks Mural Festival, which has transformed the Cadillac Room parking lot’s north wall. Cohosted by local art mavens Muralmatics, Outside In and All Of The Above Hip Hop Academy, the all-ages concert will top your charts featuring Tall Black Guy and John Beltran.

Friday, Sept. 20-Saturday, Sept. 21 >> PRIME MUSIC FESTIVAL 

Time to restock your glitter and bandana collection because Prime Music Festival is back and sizzling with chart-topping EDM and hip-hop headliners. The two-day festival will feature heavy bass beatmakers such as Rae Sremmurd, RL Grim and Dr. Fresch, as well as internet sensations Lil Mosey and What So Not, among others.

Friday, Sept. 20-Saturday, Sept. 21 >> 2019 MICHIGAN BLUESFEST 

Catch the last two days of this signature Lansing music festival. Set in the heart of Old Town, the stage is surrounded by art galleries, retail stores and new public art displays. There will be craft vendors, an expansive beverage tent and children’s activities. The event is free and donation-based, however tickets for the beverage tent, called the Turnaround Lounge, are $10.

Friday, Sept. 20 >> THE POSITIVE VIBE REGGAE CRUISE  

Join the Positive Vibe Sound System as they play smooth reggae beats down the river at sunset. DJ Paul "MexOne" Vetne will perform sets of danceable reggae including ska, dancehall, roots and dub. Afterward, Deacon Earl takes the stage to play live acoustic reggae classics. A portion of ticket sales will go to aid hurricane Dorian disaster relief efforts in the Caribbean.

Saturday, Sept. 21 REO Town Marketplace two-year anniversary pop up 

Zentangles, vintage fashion, eclectic embroidery and homemade beauty products will proliferate this shopping hub. Staple vendors such as Record Lounge, Community Finery and Vintage Junkies will be open in addition to 3-D artist Joy Yarrington and embroidery tutorials by Mei Mei’s Workshop. Saturday, Sept.21- Sunday, Sept. 22 >> “BRIGHT STAR” 

With Friday’s run already sold out, this drama is a captivating snapshot of the post-industrial South during Jim Crow, the Great Depression and World War II. The story is propelled by Alice Murphy, a writer who meets a young soldier home from the war. The soldier awakens her longing for the child she once lost, setting her up for a journey to understand her past.

Saturday, Sept. 21 >> METAPHEST METAPHYSICAL FAIR 

Awaken your third eye at Woke Mind Body Studios in REO Town. The day-long gathering will feature talks with gurus, a variety of psychic readers and mediums, palm reading, two gallery-style reading events, chair massage and reiki. There will also be vendors selling crystals, tarot and oracle decks, jewelry, art and incense.

Saturday, Sept. 21 >> CULTURE CLASH WSG ODDISEE 

As the finale of Below The Stacks Mural Festival, the culture cultivators at Outside In present Oddisee, a hip-hop artist based in Brooklyn who built his reputation in the underground scene through thought-provoking narratives. Joining him onstage are Detroit’s Finale and DJ Etta, as well as a smattering of Lansing talent including, Ozay Moore, DJ Ruckus, Omni, Ess Be and Yz Council. Time lapse footage of mural installation will also be featured during the evening

Saturday, Sept. 21 >> HEARSE FEST 2019  

Kick off Halloween season early with a spectacle of hearses and spooky memorabilia in this quirky automotive event. Aside from an assortment of new and old hearses, there will be a costume contest, pine box derby cars and a horror-synth performance by Slasher Dave.

Sunday, Sept. 22 >> THIRD ANNUAL ART AND CLASSIC CAR CRUISE IN  

The Turner Dodge house will have local artists, antique dealers and muscle car aficionados cover its lawn for its annual Classic Car Cruise In. There will also be food trucks and a live performance by The Honey Badgers.
