WEDNESDAY, Aug. 21 — Lansing’s own Lexus Jackson is carving out her niche in the local music scene with silky smooth vocals and bittersweet ballads. In 2017, Jackson, who performs as Lex J, released her first EP titled “Captured.” With cheeky anthems such as “Like That,” the album speaks to transcending superficial relationships and dodging dud dudes.
Lex J’s 2019 EP “Let’s Get Personal” shows a wiser Jackson picking herself up from the depths of depression to take on new battles head-on. In the video for “Caught Cold” Lex J is in a boxing ring with her own demons, and of course, more whack guys. Producer 2 Dramatik sets the tone for this dark, twisted love song. Lex J’s vulnerability and flow in “Caught Cold” makes it a stand-out track, with her style comparable to outspoken songstresses Kehlani and Hayley Kiyoko. Thursday, Lex J will be joined onstage by Tugga the Rapper and Rob Niro for “Soul of the Summer” at Mac’s Bar.
