Whether you'd like to learn some new dance moves, try your hand at blacksmithing, dine on a fancy four-course meal or even play bingo with drag performers, this weekend’s schedule of activities has you covered. There's also a handful of theater productions, a few Lunar New Year celebrations, a public mural-painting session, a festival dedicated to singing and much more to look forward to.
For Friday evening’s live music, we have blues/pop/rock band Sassiety at UrbanBeat and the fifth round of Q106’s Homegrown Throwdown battle of the bands contest at Grewal Hall, both at 7; variety cover band Last One Out at Holt’s Summerlands Brewing Co. at 7:30; blues musician Deacon Earl at the Peanut Barrel at 8; AC/DC tribute band ICY/DICEY at the Green Door at 8:30; and variety cover band the Reason You Came at Mash Bar at 9. Saturday’s live music begins with a performance by Michigan State University pianist Ye-Eun Hyun at Central United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. In the evening, we have blues band Blue Avenue Delegates at UrbanBeat at 7, classic-rock cover group Black Barn Band at the Irish Pub at 8 and pop/funk/R&B band Love Effect at the Green Door at 8:30. Ending the weekend on Sunday is a Lunar New Year carillon recital at MSU’s Beaumont Tower at 2 p.m., MSU’s annual Lunar New Year celebration concert at the Music Building’s Cook Recital Hall at 3 p.m., singer-songwriter Seth Austin Enos at the Avenue at 7 p.m. and Mac’s Bar’s weekly Harmony Sundays show at 9 p.m., which will feature local rappers instead of DJs this week.
Ten Pound Fiddle’s annual Mid-Winter Singing Festival kicks off 7:30 p.m. Friday at East Lansing’s University Lutheran Church with a community sing led by St. Paul, Minnesota-based pianist, accordionist, songleader and radio host Dan Chouinard. The festival continues Saturday with another community sing at noon, led by Sally Potter and friends; a “Best of the Movies” singalong at 1:15 p.m., led by Chouinard; and a folk song jam-along at 2:30 p.m., led by Lori Fithian and Jean Chorazyczewski. Lyrics will be provided at each event.
The MSU Broad Art Museum will host its monthly Family Day 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, featuring a seed-pot-decorating craft inspired by the “Farmland: Food, Justice and Sovereignty” exhibit. Additionally, at 6 p.m. Saturday, members of the Justice League of Greater Lansing will visit the museum to speak about the organization’s contributions to “Farmland.” If you can’t make it to these events but would still like to check out all the exhibitions on view, including “Complex Dreams,” “Diasporic Collage: Puerto Rico and the Survival of a People,” “Freedom in the Automation Age” and “Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection,” the museum will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
Other art displays on view this weekend include Quilting Divas’ “Eras of Women in U.S. History” exhibit at the Haslett Library’s Bookend Gallery, which is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday; the MSUFCU Student Art Exhibit at the credit union’s Headquarters Building 1, which is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; “Light Through the Darkness” at the Art Williamston gallery, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday; and a collection of artwork by the Lansing Women Artists Collective at the Okemos Library, which is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
If you’d like to get creative yourself, artist Theresa Rosado, owner of Casa de Rosado Galeria & Cultural Center, invites the public to stop by the gallery 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and help paint portions of her new Xochitlo Conuco Ancestors Garden Mural.
Ixion Ensemble Theatre wraps up its production of “She Kills Monsters” this weekend, with final performances 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Stage One at Sycamore Creek Eastwood, while All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre begins its two-weekend run of “Little Shop of Horrors,” with performances 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at East Lansing’s Hannah Community Center. The Wharton Center will also host two unique shows this weekend: dance troupe MOMIX’s “Alice,” a blend of dance, acrobatics and illusion inspired by Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s stage production of “Goodnight Moon” and “The Runaway Bunny” 1:30 and 4 p.m. Sunday.
Old Town event space Copper Moon will host a sober drag bingo event 7 p.m. Friday, featuring performances by drag troupe Kunty Kittens, bingo games with prizes, meet-and-greets with the performers and complimentary snacks. Mocktails will be available for purchase. Funds raised will benefit AYA Youth Collective, which provides housing, resources and community for LGTBQ+ youth in need.
Visit Foster Community Center 7 p.m. Friday for Lansing Parks and Recreation’s weekly travelogue presentation, which will focus on Ava George’s September trip to Poland.
Okemos pop-up restaurant Red Haven will feature Scottish wild game at its four-course dinner 7 p.m. Friday. The menu includes cock-a-leekie soup, pheasant pie, braised hare and clapshot, and tipsy laird trifle.
Attendees of Friday’s TGIF Dance Party at Bath’s Eagle Eye Banquet Center are encouraged to wear Detroit Lions apparel to celebrate a record-breaking season. Doors open at 7 p.m., followed by a line dance lesson at 7:15 p.m. and the main event from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Keys to Manifestation invites volunteers to help pick up trash around its building and along the Lansing River Trail from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday.
In celebration of Black History Month, Charlotte Community Library will host a screening of the 2019 biographical drama film “Harriet,” about abolitionist Harriet Tubman, at noon Saturday.
Downtown Lansing’s Snowfolk Showcase will conclude 4 p.m. Saturday with the announcement of the winning creations. League of Enchantment characters will roam the downtown area from 2 to 4:30 p.m. to take photos with fans. There will also be exclusive deals and specials throughout the day at participating downtown businesses.
The Greater Lansing Chinese Association and Meridian Township will co-host a Chinese New Year celebration 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday near the food court in the Meridian Mall. The event will feature cultural activities such as a parade, music, dancing, games and more.
The MSU wrestling team will take on Pennsylvania Western University Clarion 1 p.m. Sunday at Jenison Fieldhouse.
Artfire Michigan in Leslie will host its monthly First Start Sunday beginners’ blacksmithing workshop 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Each event features a shop tour, lessons on safety and technique, and a take-home project.
Finally, Grand Ledge Area District Library will host a free square dance workshop 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and clothes they can move easily in.
