River Trail receives 10,000 lb. steel spiral staircase on Michigan Avenue

WEDNESDAY, May 1 —There is a crane on Michigan Avenue today scheduled to install the latest addition to the Lansing River Trail. A stainless steel spiral staircase will descend from the Michigan Avenue bridge over the Grand River and connect to a wooden bridge section of the trail on the east side of the river.

The latest project is the result of funding from the 2014 Lansing River Trail millage. In February, Ingham county commissioners passed a resolution fast-tracking 2019 trail projects, which doubled the amount of money given to municipalities to pay for them.

“We are very thankful for the Ingham County voters for believing in trails and the millage they supported. We have a lot of construction projects going on right now around the trail,” said the city’s Lansing parks and recreation director, Brett Kaschinske

The former staircase to Michigan Avenue closed over five years ago.

“We’ve been planning on putting this in there since we condemned the other one. The funding for it was in the county millage,” Kaschinske said.

The new spiral staircase will supplement increasing traffic on the north side of the Lansing River Trail, he added.

“This will make it a lot easier for folks to be able to access the REO Olds museum, Impression Five and Riverwalk Theatre.”

There are no other new spiral staircases planned at this time for the river trail.

Kaschinske expects the new staircase to be open to the public sometime early this month

“Now this is starting to build connections with Rotary Park to the north. This is a key component and will be a key addition to downtown and the river trail.”

Officials broke ground for Rotary Park a week ago. It runs from the Shiawassee Street Bridge to the Lansing Center on the east side of the river. Rotary of Lansing and the Community Foundation are the main funders.
