THURSDAY, Sept. 24 — The Sinas Dramis Law Firm — in partnership with the Michigan Association for Justice and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School — started the People’s Law School over 40 years ago. For decades, they have been educating the people of Michigan about their rights and about the intricacies of the often labyrinthine legal system.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this year’s iteration of the People’s Law School will take place entirely online. For the first time ever, the event is free of charge.

The 7-week program includes discussions on a variety of topics. Presenters at the People’s Law School include former judges, elected politicians, experienced lawyers and law professors.

Since its inception, the People’s Law School has educated thousands of Michigan residents and held more than 450 educational sessions in cities all over the state.

Topics at the People’s Law School rotate every year, which allows it to respond to societal changes and offer courses that Michigan residents would find useful. In 2020, mass protests and a global pandemic have dominated the discourse. People’s Law School adjusted its curriculum to include speakers who are knowledgeable on these subjects.

This year’s lineup includes Martha Linderman of Linderman, who will be giving a timely presentation titled, “Employment Survival Guide: COVID-19 and Beyond.” Cynthia Heenan from Constitution Litigates Association will be speaking about the rights of protesters. There’s another presentation titled, “Landlord/Tenant Rights During a Pandemic,” from Karen Tjapkes of Legal Aid for Western Michigan.

The People’s Law School lectures take place every Tuesday night from 7 to 8 p.m., but there will be a break for Election Day on November 3. After each speaker, there will be a 15-minute question and answer session. Registration for the event is open to the public.
