Overnight parking permits available – with some hiccups

Posted

MONDAY, March 2 — The city of Lansing’s new overnight residential parking permit system is up and running — albeit with some glitches.

City spokeswoman Valerie Marchand said the system went live Sunday. There have been a handful of applications, none of which have been approved yet, she said.

The system allows for annual overnight parking permits for $125 and up to three days in a row of temporary parking at a time for $10 a night. Applications are available at www/lansingmi.gov/parking.

The city bans overnight parking from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. It will also order cars off the street for construction, snowstorms and other special situations.

Only one car per residence will be issued an annual permit.

No more than two vehicles will be allowed temporary permits in the same 72 hours.

The application process for the annual permit has flaws that Marchand said the city is ironing out with the software’s vendor.

One is that the application form for annual parking says the applicant has to provide a lease or property deed, which not all residents have, such as children or people who may be sharing a residence in a less formal arrangement.

Marchand said the language is in the process of being changed to require any legitimate proof of residence, such as a driver’s license with the residential address on it. She said applicants should say yes when asked if they have a lease or property deed — but then upload whatever proof they have. She said Parking Office employees will review whatever documents are submitted and make a decision.

Another problem is the application says the charge is $125 even though the form says the permit is only good through 11:59 p.m. June 29. However, Marchand said an annual permit will be issued for one year from the date it is approved. She said the language on the website is being changed to reflect that.

Marchand said overnight parkers will have a grace period of about a week, during which the city will put flyers on cars reminding them of the change. She said the grace period will end once enforcement officers have flyered throughout town. The city has hired three enforcement officers to deal with overnight parking, she said.
