Thursday, July 25 — Opportunity Arts owner Mike Marriot wanted to know what would happen when a dancer, musician, poet and a filmmaker got together in the same bar. Today at EagleMonk Pub and Brewery in Delta Township, Marriot is kicking off that experiment by inviting artists to come together for a no-frills networking event.

"The more that artists can familiarize themselves with each other's work, and see how they can work together, the more creativity they will be able to foster as a community," Marriot said.

Marriot came to Lansing by way of New York City where he worked in arts administration. A trained tap dancer, Marriot got his chops in arts promotion by studying the business of dance and became the marketing director for The Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classic Ballet. Although originally from Peoria, Ill., Marriot’s grandfather grew up in Michigan and passed down his love for the Detroit Lions. After attending his first Lions Thanksgiving game with his father, Marriot and his wife were inspired to start their newborn business, Opportunity Arts, in Michigan.

Not long after the game, Marriot moved to Lansing in 2017 and started Opportunity Arts. The business provides promotional and administrative services to individual artists and arts organizations. The company's business model allows artists and arts entities to enlist services when needed. Individual artists and art collectives have utilized Opportunity Arts as their administrative team, while arts organizations have hired Opportunity Arts to handle specific promotional projects. While Opportunity Arts is for-profit, it is partnered with a New York-based nonprofit, Pentacle, to sponsor Michigan artists.

Opportunity Arts has worked with EagleMonk in the past to raise money for one of their clients, Happendance — a local dance studio. Additionally, every month, the pub features the work of local artists and has weekly live performances.

The networking event is free and there is no RSVP required. Craft beer, hard cider, wine and food will be available for purchase.
