Michigan Avenue TARDIS transports food from those who have to those who don’t

FRIDAY, Sept. 13 — A TARDIS has appeared on Michigan Avenue, but Doctor Who hasn’t transported to Lansing in 2019.

The British telephone box made famous by the BBC series is instead an eyecatching design for a mobile food pantry from Punks with Lunch, an anarchist group that tries to help people who are homeless or hungry.

“Let’s go big or go home. Let’s build a friggin’ TARDIS,” said Julia Miller, a co-founder of Punks with Lunch.

The pantry in front of the Triple Goddess Book Store has soup, canned and bagged beans and pasta as well as ramen noodles. On some days, it also ends up with fresh vegetables, including leafy greens, food Miller would like to discourage because of its tendency to spoil quickly.

Still, for now, Punks with Lunch is hoping an anarchist approach, where people can leave or take food as they want will work. “If it’s getting wiped out pretty quickly, we may have to keep a better eye on it.

It’s not the only sidewalk food pantry in the area -- another homeless outreach group, Cardboard Prophets, has boxes for people to leave food cater-corner, which included bags of apples and carrots as well as some canned beans. They also have a pantry to drop clothing for infants and children.
