Lansing seeks proposals for Reutter Park artwork

Designs should ‘speak to Lansing’s heritage, promote inclusiveness’

MONDAY, July 27 — The city of Lansing is still looking for artistic designs for a permanent public installation for the northeast corner of Reutter Park in downtown Lansing.

Officials extended today a deadline for proposals for the upcoming artwork plans, asking artists or artist-led teams based in Michigan — with preference to those based in Lansing and the tri-county region — to submit proposals for review by 5 p.m. Aug. 15.

All submissions will be reviewed by the Lansing Public Art Committee. A smaller panel will then select the finalist early next month, according to a press release.

“I’m thrilled that LEAP has awarded the city grant funding to install a new piece of public art at the park. Our recently installed playground is now open for public use and this is just the start of what this park could become.” Mayor Andy Schor said recently.

Last year, the city organized a community listening session to redesign Reutter Park. The upcoming artwork at the corner of Kalamazoo Street and Capitol Avenue is designed to “enhance the area’s economic vibrancy and sense of place,” the announcement said.

The Public Art for Communities Program is funded by the Lansing Economic Area Partnership with support from the PNC Foundation. The Lansing City Council accepted a $10,000 grant last month, with a match of up to $5,000 for eligible activities also approved in Brownfield funding. The new art piece should “speak to Lansing’s heritage, promote inclusiveness and reflect the opportunity for growth in the future,” the announcement said, and will be placed prominently in the northeast corner, serving as a gateway between Reutter Park and downtown.

Complementing placemaking efforts already underway, the artwork will be placed adjacent to the newly installed Eclipse Net Play structure.
