Lansing NAACP launches voter registration drive

Friendship Baptist Church to host first event on Saturday

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 7 — The Lansing NAACP is hosting a series of voter registration drives geared toward voter education and increasing voter turnout ahead of the November election.

“It is imperative that we galvanine the community and register people to vote so they can use their voices” Dale Copedge, president of the Lansing branch of the NAACP said in a release. “This upcoming election is extremely critical and we have to vote like our lives depend on it.”

The first event is 11 a.m. to 1 pm. on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Lansing’s Grace International Outreach Church, 1901 Massachusetts Ave. Church members will also pass out masks and grocery items for those that need assistance. The other events are scheduled as follows:

  • 9-11 a.m. on Oct. 17 at Lansing’s Friendship Baptist Church, 2912 Pleasant Grove Rd.
  • Noon to 5 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the South Lansing Election Unit, 2500 S. Washington St.
  • 2-5 p.m. on Nov. 1 at the South Lansing Election Unit, 2500 S. Washington St.

A recent Washington Post analysis showed that voting rates among African Americans in

Michigan dropped nearly 12% between 2012 and 2016, according to the NAACP. Pew Research also shows that Black voter turnout declined by 7% nationally in 2016.

“We have to do everything we can to help educate the public on where to vote and how to vote,” Lansing NAACP Political Action Committee Chairman Carlton Evans said in a press release.
