Lansing mayor: Cut back on water next month and win a brand new car

THURSDAY, July 30 — Mayor Andy Schor wants local residents to cut back on needlessly using water next month as the city of Lansing faces off against other municipalities nationwide for environmentally sustainable bragging rights — and a chance to win a shiny, new Toyota.

Schor announced today that the city of Lansing, throughout the month of August, will participate in the “2020 Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation,” a nationwide nonprofit effort from the Wyland Foundation. The friendly competition challenges residents and city staff to conserve as much water and natural resources as possible in comparison to other cities nationwide.

Efforts can be as simple as reducing the use of sprinkler systems or as large as orchestrating ways to prevent runoff into local water sources, according to a city press release. The primary goal: ensure that natural resources across the nation are conserved for future generations.

By participating, residents can “help build awareness about the importance of watersheds and protecting our water resources in Lansing, and across the country,” Schor said in a statement.

Residents can accept the challenge by signing a pledge at mywaterpledge.com. Participants will have a chance to win hundreds of prizes, including a drawing for a 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Select schools in winning cities will also have a chance for a water efficiency retrofit.
