Lansing doles out refunds for short-lived parking permits

Schor: Refunds ‘the right thing to do’ for law-abiding residents

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 7 — Residents who bought permits to park on streets overnight are being fully refunded for the costs after the Lansing City Council repealed a ban on overnight parking.

By 5-3 vote, the City Council eliminated an ordinance this month that long banned streetside parking in the city from 2-5 a.m. The change also cut short an ill-fated permitting system — which offered paid waivers to that ordinance — that had just got started before the pandemic.

Residents who already paid for those permits are now being refunded, Mayor Andy Schor announced this week. Many have already had that cash wired back to their bank accounts. Staff will contact those whose refunds cannot be completed through their original payment methods.

A spokeswoman for Schor’s office said about 200 permits had been purchased and are now set for refunds. At $125 each, that’s about $25,000 that would’ve gone to pay for its enforcement.

Schor labeled the refunds for permit purchasers as “the right thing to do” in a press release. Although the overnight parking has been eliminated, residents may still be required to move vehicles for snow plowing or other emergency situations as part of a replacement ordinance.

Those with questions or concerns can contact city staff at 517-483-4340 for more information.
