Lansing churches assemble for ‘Pray on MLK’ tomorrow

National prayer gathering movement arrives in Lansing

FRIDAY, Aug. 6 — At least a dozen local churches (and counting) across Greater Lansing will gather tomorrow evening for a two-hour prayer session along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The “Pray on MLK” movement — a project coordinated by the Civil Righteousness nonprofit based in Ferguson, Missouri — will host a peaceful, silent prayer demonstration on Saturday evening in Lansing from 6:01-8:01 p.m. at Kingdom Life Church, at 4303 S.Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The prayer gathering is part of a national movement “dedicated to racial reconciliation and restorative justice through spiritual, cultural and economic renewal,” organizers explained.

Pastor Coye Bouyer of Kingdom Life Church and Pastor Jessie Still of Spirit of Christ Church and the House of Prayer will lead the effort tomorrow in Lansing. Bouyer said people will gather outside Kingdom Life Church and spread out along the roadway as necessary from there.

Bouyer billed the event as a response to ongoing protests and inequities across the country. Instead of having picket signs, he said, churches are responding how churches do: with prayer.

“Because a lot of the different churches involved in this are both predominantly Black and predominately white, this event also creates unity and crosses racial lines,” Bouyer added. “All of this speaks to and reflects the unity that exists within our church and within our community.”

To help curb the spread of the coronavirus, the upcoming event will take place entirely outdoors. Visit prayonmlk.org for additional details about the upcoming national “Pray on MLK” movement.
