Hark! The return of the red Christmas balls

Posted

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 20 — BWL workers were spotted this morning reinstalling the Christmas ornaments on Michigan Avenue’s traffic circle just in front of the Capitol. The classic Lansing decoration is arriving in the nick of time, as preparations continue for Silver Bells in the City Friday.

The red balls, which the city placed in the circle during the Bernero administration, were destined to wither away in storage after being busted by a hit-and-run driver, but local real estate investor Paul Gentilozzi came to the rescue by donating $7,000 to fund their repair.

Before Gentilozzi’s generous gift, a sculpture by local artist Bob Welton, “Sundance,” was briefly considered as a replacement. Instead, it resides up the street on the City Hall Plaza.
