WEDNESDAY, Aug. 12 — East Lansing residents experiencing financial hardships tied to the COVID-19 pandemic are now eligible to apply for emergency rent and mortgage assistance.

City officials rolled out a program last week that offers up to $2,000 in grant assistance toward outstanding rent or mortgage payments from as early as March. Residents must live in the city limits and provide documentation of a coronavirus-related hardship like job loss or medical bills.

The new emergency assistance fund is supported through a Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Funding is available for up to 100 households to receive grants, and applications will be reviewed first come, first serve.

“We recognize the financial hardships our residents are facing during this pandemic,” said Amy Schlusler-Schmitt, the city’s community development & engagement manager in a release. “We feel fortunate to be able to provide some financial support during these unprecedented times.”

Applicants will work directly with the Capital Area Housing Partnership to apply for and receive funds. Application materials and program guidelines are available at capitalareahousing.org. Residents can also call 517-332-4663 or email info@capitalareahousing.org for more details.

“We understand that each person’s story is unique, and it is okay to ask for help,” added Rawley Van Fossen, executive director of the Capital Area Housing Partnership. “Our housing counselors are equipped to assist East Lansing residents through financial hardships brought on by the pandemic so they can sustain their homes.”
