East Lansing Arts Commission accepting grant applications

Posted

THURSDAY, Oct. 8 — Calling all starving artists! The East Lansing Arts Commission is accepting applications for its Fiscal Year 2021 Cultural Arts Grant program. If the COVID-19 outbreak has negatively affected your creative career, this is the perfect opportunity to receive an influx of cash and create something wonderful.

The Cultural Arts Grant program is intended to encourage public participation in the arts and fund high-quality, public art projects that the whole East Lansing community can enjoy. Anyone is encouraged to apply, but the program emphasizes support for the cultural appreciation of Black, indigenous, LGBTQ and POC communities,

Artists working in any medium can apply for a grant. The program funds a wide variety of projects, ranging from concerts to exhibitions to public arts education initiatives.

Last year’s recipients included Vivek Vellanki’s Passport Photo Project, in which he asked fifty local immigrants the question, “What do you want the world to know about you?”

Community Darkroom 517 received $704 from last year’s program to help fund and maintain a safe, well-sustained public darkroom — the only one of its kind in Michigan.

This year, the arts commission has up to $17,500 to work with.

First-time applicants or those who need assistance with their application can RSVP to an informative webinar, where all their questions about the grant program will be answered. It takes place on Zoom on Oct. 13 at 11:30 a.m. To RSVP, email Heather Majano at hmajano@cityofeastlansing.com.

The commission is accepting applications until October 23 at five p.m. All FY21 projects and events must be completed between November 1, 2020 and June 30 2021. More information about the Cultural Arts Grant program can be found at cityofeastlansing.com/CulturalArtsGrant
