St. Clair Shores Poet Laureate M.L. Liebler and his Magic Poetry Band will bring their unique fusion of poetry and modern jazz music to East Lansing’s University United Methodist Church 4 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 15) for a free performance hosted by the Lansing Poetry Club.

Liebler, a Wayne State University professor and literary arts activist, has published 15 books and chapbooks, including “Working Words: Punching the Clock & Kicking Out the James,” “I Want to Be Once,” “Heaven Was Detroit: An Anthology of Detroit Music Essays from Jazz to Hip-Hop” and “Respect: Poets on Detroit Music,” all of which received Michigan Notable Book awards. His work, which he’s performed across the United States and well beyond, focuses on the working class, politics and spirituality.

An open mic will follow the performance. Those looking to share a poem are invited to sign up at the door. For more information, visit facebook.com/LansingPoetryClub or call Lansing Poetry Club President Ruelaine Stokes at (517) 881-7562.
