THURSDAY, Aug. 1 — The international bathtub races will see tubs of all shapes and sizes race on the downhill track going through Bath Township’s downtown. Some may be actual bathtubs on wheels while others qualify as watertight vessels.
In teams of two, one member gives the tub a running pushed start while the driver tries to keep the tub straight down the hill.
The event is part of the Bath Days Festival, which also features a car show, artisan vendors, a parade and carnival rides.
Last year, the Bath Township Fire Department took home the crown for first place, clocking in at 26 miles per hour on the downslope. Despite only holding a driver’s license for a week, 16-year-old Korbin Dunham outmaneuvered the competition.
Firefighter Mike Hawkins said the team makes a few modifications each year but keeps the bathtub racer close to its original condition with a welded frame and bicycle-part construction.
“We've always been able to beat the police with it,” Hawkins said.
Another international bathtub race takes place on the water in Nanaimo, Canada. For that race, hundreds of outboard motor bathtubs run a 36-mile route to the finish line.
