Target to hire 80 for mini-store in East Lansing

Posted

THURSDAY, May 16 — Target is holding a series of job fairs starting Sunday for 80 positions at the small-format store opening in East Lansing in late July —  the first of its kind in the state.

For student hires, Target is offering tuition reimbursement depending on job-related courses at an accredited technical school, college or university.

“At Target, we value the people who help us serve the local community and look forward to providing them meaningful opportunities to build and develop valuable career skills,” said Katie Stewart, the new East Lansing small-format Target store director.

The average small-format Target is around 40,000 square feet compared to a full-size 130,000 square-foot store. The new location will focus on convenient, on-the-go shopping.

“A small-format store is designed to feel like a Target store,” Target spokeswoman Jacqueline DeBuse said. “The difference is that it's a third of the size. We have to be intentional about what we stock and how we design the store. Given we are so close to campus, we are thinking about the student body.”

The East Lansing location will primarily stock an assortment of food and beverage items, personal care and beauty products, dorm and apartment essentials and apparel, according to a press release.

Target CEO Brian Cornell said that small-format Target stores generate twice the amount of revenue per square foot than full-sized Target stores. Target has nearly 100 of these small-format stores open nationwide, Debuse said.

“As we open these small-format stores across the country, we are focused on growing them where full-sized stores don’t fit like urban centers and college campuses.”
