Time: 2 p.m.
Phone: (517) 853-6787
Ruth Ebenstein, a Southfield native, will present "Transforming Darkness into Light: Breast Cancer Survivors Transcend the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict". Ebenstein is an American-Israeli writer and activist for women's health. Her uplifting story about her unexpected close friendship that emerged out of breast cancer with a Palestinian has been covered by the BBC, The Atlantic and NPR. Ebenstein was diagnosed with breast cancer while nursing her baby and feared she would die. Lumpectomy scars still healing, she joined an Israeli-Palestinian breast cancer support group, hoping to find something "good" in cancer. Ebenstein met Ibtisam Erekat, a Muslim Palestinian woman who she now calls kin. Ebenstein says her friendship with Ibtisam is as strong as ever, despite the terrible violence that surrounds them.
