Steiner Chorale Spring Concert

Date: Sunday, May 18, 2014
Time: 2 p.m.
In its final concert of the season, the Steiner Chorale will offer two exciting musical experiences. nThe chorale will be joined by the highly esteemed opera performer, teacher, and lecturer, George Shirley. Mr. Shirley recently celebrated his 80th birthday. During a career spanning 49 years he performed more than 80 operatic roles in major opera houses world wide. As his career unfolded, Mr. Shirley broke numerous barriers, including being the first African-American to be appointed to a high school teaching post in music in Detroit, the first African-American member of the United States Army Chorus in Washington, D.C., and the first African-American tenor and second African-American male to sing leading roles with the Metropolitan Opera, where he remained for eleven years.nnIn addition to selections featuring Mr. Shirley, the chorale will perform the worldwide premiere of \"To Music\". The work, composed by Mark Volkert (Assistant Concert Master, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra), was commissioned by the Chorale to honor Professor Ethel Armeling in recognition of her long support of musical arts and teaching in the Greater Lansing area.
