April 15, 2014 %u2013 The Lansing area Take Back the Night offers an environment for survivors of sexual and relationship violence to empower themselves, for the public to learn about the issue, and for the community to stand up against this type of violence in their city, county, state, country, and world. Beginning with a performance by artist/poet Melissa Dey Hasbrook at 4pm, followed by the SpeakOut at 5:00 in Beaumont Field and candlelight vigil at 6:30, Take Back the Night will culminate with a march from Beaumont Tower to Lansing Capital Building at 7:00pm, with Senator Gretchen Whitmer delivering the keynote speech on Lansing Capital Building's east steps at 9pm.nnOne in six women and one in thirty-three men will be the victim of attempted or completed rape in their lifetime (http://rainn.org/get-information/statistics/sexual-assault-victims). Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women (http://domesticviolencestatistics.org/domestic-violence-statistics/.nnThese types of violence occur everywhere. Survivors are everywhere. The prevalence of this violence is why the Greater Lansing Community needs to stand up and take back the night.nnParticipators with disabilities, please contact lansingtbtn@gmail.com with any accommodations required.
