The AARP SMART DRIVER course is a comprehensive course to promote safe driving, and is designed especially for the older driver. The course has a national enrollment each year in the hundreds of thousands. The course discusses numerous strategies to make driving safer. It also looks at some of the physical changes that occur as we get older and it identifies ways to adjust our driving for many of these changes. The discussion of safe driving strategies also involves a thorough review of traffic regulations and car safety equipment. This course is an updated version of what was formerly known as the AARP DRIVER SAFETY course. The course involves a total of 8 hours of class given over the two days. Participants are expected to attend both days. Although participants are encouraged to take part in class discussions, there are no formal tests or graded activities. Some auto insurance companies will give a discount for the completion of this course, and this discount may apply for up to three years. Discuss this with your insurance agent. Questions about the content of the course may be addressed to the instructor, Peter Lappan (tel. (517) 351-3710. Tuition for the course is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Checks should be made out to AARP.
