A Rally of Writers

The 27th Rally of Writers will be held on April 12, 2014. The conference features a keynoter and 16 breakout sessions led by published Michigan authors in several genres of writing. Fleda Brown, who will keynote and offer sessions on memoir, is a nationally recognized poet who also writes creative nonfiction, articles, and blogs. Her topic is "Madness and Responsibility %u2013 The Writer's Contrary Companions." (Free; open to the public.) Other sessions will focus on novels, short stories, short films, articles, poetry, agents, and marketing. Speakers include Beverly Jenkins, from Belleville, whose 36th historical novel has been nominated for the NAACP Image Award; Jeff Vande Zande, who teaches at Delta, writes screenplays, and won a Michigan Notable Book Award for his novel American Poet; Andrea King Collier, a Lansing journalist, book author, and award-winning essayist; Holt's Rick Murcer, who markets his ebooks with great success; Lansing's Lori Nelson Spielman, whose debut novel, The Life List, has been optioned for film; and internationally acclaimed author Lev Raphael, Okemos, who has 25 books in many genres that have been translated into a dozen languages. Speakers will sign books in Authors' Alley. Books will be available onsite from Schuler Books. Conference cost: $75 in advance ($85 at the door); $55 for students ($65 at the door). Reservations with Manuscript Review ($30) are due by March 20. Reservations with Lunch ($15) are due by April 4. Events are sponsored by Gibson's Bookstore, the Skaaldic Society, Lansing Community College, and the Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Rally Warm-Up on Friday night will focus on "Early Reading Issues," a panel discussion by people from RIF, Early Childhood Literacy, and MeL, Michigan's eLibrary.
