Off to South Africa

Lansing-born violinist Melissa White and her Harlem Quartet head overseas next month

Thursday, March 29 — Violinist and Lansing native Melissa White and her Harlem Quartet will travel to South Africa in April; the Harlem Quartet has been chosen as a United States Arts Envoy. White, fellow violinist Ilmar Gavilan, violist Juan Miguel Hernandez and cellist Paul Wiancko plan to conduct workshops and perform recitals in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

Wednesday, April 11 — "Sherlock," the BBC series that adapts Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tales to present-day London, has become a major hit on PBS's "Masterpiece Mystery." The second season begins next month, and WKAR-TV is staying a step ahead of the game by hosting a sneak preview of the next three episodes at 7 p.m. May 3. The event will be held at Michigan State University’s Communication Arts & Sciences Building.

In short: Home delivery rates are increasing — almost $7 a month more in some instances. Sunday newsstand prices are also doubling from $1.50 to $3, Priester confirmed today, though weekday newsstand prices will remain $1. Both changes take effect May 1.
