Lansing Civic Players on hiatus

'Strategic growth, collaboration and reorganization plan' announced

Earlier this week, Lansing Civic Players scrapped plans to stage "Mrs. Warren's Profession," the George Bernard Shaw comedy that replaced "A Shot in the Dark" on the company's schedule. Now comes word LCP won't be putting on any shows for the rest of the year.

Meet the high priestess of New African Soul

Combining traditional East African folk, Afro-pop and even elements of classical Western music, Somi — the daughter of Rwandese and Ugandan parents, who is now makes her home in New York — won over audiences at the Summer Solstice Jazz festival in East Lansing in June. Now, the singer returns for a concert at the Wharton Center's Pasant Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Meridian Community Band salutes Sousa

Trombonist Ava Ordman and tenor Mark Gary are guest artists

The Meridian Community Band, under the direction of Carolyn Sherrill, presents the 17th Annual Grand Sousa Concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at the MacDonald Middle School, 1901 Burcham Drive. The program showcases soloists Ava Ordman, associate professor of trombone at Michigan State University, and Mark Gary, a tenor who is currently completing the doctoral program in choral conducting at MSU.

You can start today in downtown Lansing when the downtown association hosts its third annual Trick-or-Treat on the Square. Wharton Center’s Thursday, Oct. 7 performance by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra with violinist Sarah Chang and the preceding Preview Dinner have both been canceled. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra and its orchestra committee and union reached an impasse in negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement.
