Architecture critic Amanda Harrell-Seyburn says: Blight isn’t just an urban thing. The fact is, blight occurs at all levels of the built environment, but we are only used to seeing blight at the most urban and rural levels. But blight, like this collection of buildings on West Grand River Avenue, is there, even in places like Okemos.

Ryan and Mandy Starski didn’t listen to the naysayers — and they’re glad

The lobby of the Waterford Estates looks almost inviting, as if waiting for the next round of guests to come inside and check into their rooms. Never mind the ivy slowly inching it s way up the outside windows the inside seems relatively well maintained.

Monday, Sept. 19 — It’s the first concert of the new season. You might expect cobwebs. You might expect the orchestra to be like the students at Michigan State University: willing to play, but wishing summer had been just a bit longer.There may have been a couple cobwebs still left in the corners, but Lansing Symphony’s opening performance Friday night made one thing clear: The symphony is ready for action.

The man who invited Terry Jones

When controversial Florida pastor Terry Jones confirmed his plans to attend a rally in Lansing, reader underdog5056 asked, “Who in the world invited this goon in the first place?” That would be James Terpening. Terpening was quick to clarify that the Sept. 7 rally on the steps of the State Capitol in Lansing an event he planned ' and Jones is an invited speaker. “The rally is the founding public event for my organization, Operation Freedom’s Tree,” Terpening said.
