Honoring tradition-bearers

Great Lakes Folk Festival presents the 2011 Michigan Heritage Awards

Thursday, Aug. 11 — This weekend, a special ceremony will take place at the Great Lakes Folk Festival to honor three tradition-bearers from Michigan. The 2011 Michigan Heritage Awards were given to sheep shearer Deborah Caryl, sacred steel guitar player Calvin Cooke and, posthumously, to Gaylord Klancnik, a Slovenian polka musician and bandleader.

Gazing into my crystal ball, I can see a gathering charged with mystery and intrigue approaching. Yes, it is becoming clear — there will be people emerging from the haze seeking guidance and direction. I'm sensing the beginning of many journeys. I can feel that it will be a day to try new things. Maybe you should ask for a date with that hot co-worker you've been drooling over. Or perhaps it is time to switch to a career in coal mining.
