This week's Turn it Down is a special edition dedicated to the live-music finale of the Capital City Film Fest. The shows are "all ages" and will be at The Loft (414 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing).

How times have changed. After a number of corporate buyouts, much of the local on-air talent in Lansing (and beyond) is gradually being replaced by nationally syndicated shows that are recorded and produced in other regions of the country. Yet, somehow radio is still clinging to the “live and local” ideal.

Known as the "Belleville Three," Detroit producers Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson are heralded as the innovators of techno. Saturday, Saunderson performs at The Loft.

Lansing is typically stocked with rockin' roots shows, and this weekend is no exception. The Whiskey Pickers, a Lansing-based four-piece folk/bluegrass band, headline a bluegrass show Saturday at Mac's Bar.

Steppin' In It lead singer Joshua Davis releases his third rootsy solo album, "A Miracle of Birds," Friday at (SCENE) Metrospace. Backing Davis is Laura Bates, Jen Sygit, Mike Lynch and Geoff Lewis. Davis' new album was inspired by a trip he made last year to the West Bank.

Wednesday, May 18 — The 2009 noir drama “Fairview St.” has won nine major awards and been accepted into 21 film festivals internationally since its release. The locally written and produced feature will be shown on the big screen one last time Thursday at Celebration Cinema. Following the viewing, a night of live music at Moriarty’s Pub will pay homage to another aspect of the movie – its moody, Americana-flavored soundtrack.

Thursday, Aug. 18 — Originally from Fort Wayne, Ind., and now living in Laingsburg, 34-year-old Jesse Deardorff-Green became a professional actor at an early age. Today, he keeps busy in the Lansing theater scene, working in productions at Peppermint Creek Theatre Co., Riverwalk Theatre, Lansing Community College Theatre, Michigan State University Theatre, and various other independent companies. He is also writing a novel. Deardorff-Green talked with City Pulse about his career and the Renegade Theatre Festival, which hosts plays in various locations across Old Town by the area’s up-and-comers. Two plays that Deardorff-Green wrote (and performs in) are included in this weekend’s festival.

Wednesday, Nov. 16 — In addition to his recognizable gruff, yet shrieking voice, Bobcat Goldthwait is also known for his dark comedy that shines through in his stand-up routines as well as the films he’s written and directed over the past 25 years. While some may remember him from the “Police Academy” series and his own edgy flicks like “Shakes the Clown,” today the 49-year old comedian keeps busy touring comedy clubs and producing on-the-fringe films.

Friday, Nov. 25 -- Since the always-controversial Oscar winner Michael Moore shot to stardom in 1989 with “Roger & Me,” a documentary focusing on the negative effects of General Motors plants closing in Flint, the film director, author, and activist hasn’t strayed far from his Mitten State roots, even after scoring massive commercial successes with “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11.” The 57-year-old Traverse City resident recently released “Here Comes Trouble,” an autobiography focused on his earliest years. Moore will discuss the new book and some current political topics Tuesday at the Michigan State University Auditorium.

Thursday, Dec. 8 — CJ Kjolhede, formerly of the defunct Roll Over Radio, has a new one-man-band called The Patient Zeros. He describes himself as a “garage folker.”
