The Great Lakes Collective, a Lansing-based music collective, has a large roster of local talent, including Vanity, Oh Vanity, which plays (SCENE) Metrospace on Thursday. The keyboard-driven, “vintage indie rock” band (that credits Woody Allen as a primary influence) features Kelly Tabor (vocals and keyboards), Jake Simmons (guitar and vocals), Joel Hornbeck (bass) and Greg Thompson (drums). Also performing is songwriter Ryan Kralik (from Kent, Ohio), plus locals Kyle Nelson Pentecost and Frances Bennigan.

However, during the 1940s and '50s, some of those hard-living songwriters traveled north to Michigan, often in search of work. One of those legendary bluesmen was Mississippi-born Big Bill Broonzy, who landed in Delton at the Circle Pines Center, a summer camp and retreat and host of the upcoming Second Annual Buttermilk Jamboree music fest.

R.I.P. to Lansing rapper Big Perm The Lansing hip-hop scene suffered a tragic loss when rapper and promoter Cameron Doyle, a.k.a. Big Perm, passed away at Sparrow Hospital on June 2 after suffering a stroke. Doyle, who was influenced by legends like Pimp C, Notorious B.I.G. and Big Punisher, released his first mixtape in 2005 and soon became a pivotal figure in the local hip-hop scene, although he’d often play shows in Jackson and as far away as Florida. He operated his own company, Street Dream Entertainment, organized the State of the Union rap showcases at area venues, and played Common Ground Musical Festival multiple times, including opening for Ludacris and Three Six Mafia.

Another Roadside Attraction, which plays Mac’s Bar Thursday with The Lansing Unionized Vaudeville Spectacle, is a Virginia-based band with a love for nostalgia and the carnival. The band members not only co-write songs; they also create costumes and band merchandise together. Along with guitars and drums, the band also features fiddle, cello, viola, tenor banjo, kazoo, and ukulele players — plus a bunch of other oddball instruments, such as the spoons and “the clockworks.”

O'Death, People´s Temple, plurals at Mac's O’Death is a Brooklyn-based alt-country band that combines folk, bluegrass, and indie music into a distinctive style of Americana music. On May 30, the band plays Mac’s Bar, along with Wavvy Hands, The Plurals and People´s Temple. O´Death, which includes a banjo, fiddle, and ukulele player, took its name from an ancient Appalachian dirge. With a wealth of musical influences, O’Death channels the likes of Bill Monroe, Neil Young, even Prince and The Misfits. Pitchfork Media said the band ranges from “menacing and frantic” to “odd and quiet”; Pitchfork also rated the album with a favorable 7.9 (out of 10) rating.

'90s Alt-Rockers at Uli's Caroline’s Spine, who saw national success with Hollywood Records back in the mid-‘90s, plays Thursday at Uli’s Haus of Rock. Opening the show are modern-rockers Adalene and the acoustic-rock sounds of Surviving Justin. Caroline’s Spine, led by lead singer/songwriter Jimmy Newquist, toured throughout the ‘90s, putting out singles like “The Light Inside” and “Sullivan” and sharing the bills with alt-bands like Catherine Wheel and Better Than Ezra, as well as legends like KISS and Aerosmith. BMP drops new Homelife LP at Zeppelin´s Bermuda Mohawk Productions, a Lansing-based indie label, is set to release “Translation,” a vinyl LP from Homelife, a Lansing-based post-hardcore punk band. The 12-inch LP is limited to 500 copies and will be released Friday at an all-ages show at Zeppelin’s Music Hall in Lansing. Also performing are Cavalcade, Terror Terror Oh My, and Narc Out the Reds. For those wanting to hear a preview of the album, Homelife’s first single from the new disc (“Viewfinder”) is streaming exclusively on Alternative Press.

Back in 1938, musician Andy Cummings was nearing the end of a long tour with the Paradise Islands Revue when he arrived in Lansing on an icy winter day. After his performance, the temperature had dropped to 5 degrees. Cummings walked back to his hotel and began to reminisce about the crashing waves and sandy white beaches of Hawaii.
