Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum update

In Section: A&E blog Posted By: JamesSanford
- With less than two months to go until the groundbreaking ceremony, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum on the campus of Michigan State University has just received another $2 million in funding from Eli Broad. The Broads' total gift to MSU to $28 million: $21 million is earmarked for construction costs, with the remaining $7 million to be used for acquisitions, exhibition set-up and operational expenses. “Edye and I are pleased to expand our commitment to create a world-class art museum for MSU and the broader Lansing and central Michigan region,” said Eli Broad, in a press release from MSU. “This new museum, designed by one of the world’s leading architects, will become a contemporary art destination, and it extends our mission of enabling art to be seen by the broadest public.” According to MSU, nearly $33 million has been raised for the museum, exceeding the $30 million goal set in 2007. The estimated cost for the project (scheduled to measure 46,000 square feet) is between $40-45 million. Construction is expected to take about 23 months, with a planned 2012 opening. The Broad Art Museum is designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid. To take a virtual tour of the facility, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wa8VMbUJh0

What an eyesore! Speaking of which, I am going to photograph this monstrosity and submit it to Kunstler's "Eyesore of the Month" column. How anyone with even a primitive sense of taste could have approved this giant garbage can is beyond me. A nice brick building that fit the Campus and East Lansing was not good enough, apparently, to the pretentious poseurs who think that this building is awesome.
