Farmer in 'The L'

Two Lansing-area restaurants maximizing fresh, local produce

by Laura Johnson
I recently saw a clip from the show "Portlandia" in which a dining couple asks their server an absurd list of questions about the local origins of the chicken on the menu. When the server produces the chicken's papers (his name was Colin, and he was fed a diet of sheep's milk, soy and hazelnuts), the couple remains unconvinced, and the scene ends when they leave the restaurant to go check out Colin's farm before they can feel comfortable ordering him for lunch.

We olive a good burger

Food Fight tackles Michigan original

by ALLAN I. ROSS
Of the many things Michigan is famous for — the Great Lakes, Motown music, Madonna — some things tend to fly under the national radar and remain (mostly) local secrets — the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinac Island, Bruce Campbell. You may be surprised to find out that the subject of this month's Food Fight is one of these Michigan originals: olive burgers.

He Ate, She Ate

Chivalry still reigns at stalwart Lansing restaurant

by Mark Nixon and Gabrielle Johnson
I'm a sucker for old restaurants. In a business where restaurants routinely fade to black, you have to admire a place that has outlasted many of its rivals and a good many of its customers. The Knight Cap is such a place; one of the granddaddies of fine dining in Greater Lansing. It opened in 1969, a few blocks east of the Capitol, before Michigan Avenue boasted a ballpark or the Lansing Center.

A French connection

Eaton Rapids chef offers private gourmet cooking lessons

by Gabrielle Johnson
Whichever argument you support in the age-old "eat to live vs. live to eat" debate, you have to admit that we spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about food. Eat for health. Eat for pleasure. Gluten-free. Paleo. Flexitarian. Food has its own vocabulary nowadays and someone has to teach you to speak the language.

Lasagna mark, get set …

Food Fight team focuses on Italian favorite

by ALLAN I. ROSS
Well that didn't take long: Barely two weeks into the new year and already the folks making up this month's Food Fight team have reverted to our gluttonous selves. But with the title of Best Lasagna in Lansing at stake, could we really be expected to stick to our diets?

He Ate, She Ate

It's hip to be Squared at Lansing's debut wine bar

by Mark Nixon and Gabrielle Johnson
When someone in our family mentions a good wine they tried recently, the standard response is: "Did you detect notes of baby powder and asphalt?"
