Due to a reporting error, an earlier version of this story misidentified the film's spokeswoman and writer/director. Linda Toomey is the film's spokeswoman and Rola Nashef as the film's writer/director.

Thursday, Feb. 6 — What’s love like through a bulletproof glass? That’s the question asked by the Detroit-made romantic comedy “Detroit Unleaded.” And if the answer is a little fuzzy, then this Friday is your chance to clear things up.

“Unleaded” has been playing at Studio C! as part of the winter East Lansing Film Series for two weeks, and this Friday, the Lansing native filmmakers will be on-hand for a talkback after the film’s 6:30 p.m. screening. This is the second talkback for the movie, which film spokeswoman Linda Toomey said drew a lot of interest.

“We've received a lot of fans with passionate emotion to the film,” she said.

The film is a slice-of-life romantic comedy set in a 24-hour gas station in Detroit. “Unleaded” started as a short film, but writer/director Rola Nashef turned it into a feature length film after it received buzz at several film festivals. The feature-length version received recognition at the Toronto Film Festival, and has been accepted into film festivals around the world, from Cleveland to Dubai.

Made and cast in Detroit, the film stars first-time feature actors EJ Assi and Nada Shouhayib in the lead roles. Co-star Mike Batayeh has appeared in “Breaking Bad” and the Adam Sandler vehicle “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.” But the film’s mid-Michigan roots seem to be a source of pride for the filmmakers.

“It’s nice to have the film come home,” she said.
