On stands today: Happy birthday, Jim Harrison

by City Pulse Staff

Wednesday, Dec. 11 — Prolific author and Michigan native Jim Harrison talks with City Pulse's Bill Castanier in the lead up to Harrison's 76th birthday party in Arizona. Harrison and friends discuss the author's nearly 50-year literary career and ... head cheese.

Convent coming down

St. Casimir Parish Community in the Moores Park Neighborhood is on the verge of demolishing an 85-year-old convent that sits on the campus between Barnes and Sparrow avenues. A church official said it was too costly to maintain or refurbish, while some neighbors are upset to see it go.

Aesthetes in action

Nearly every line of sight in the home of Jerry and Joan Mattson ends in a piece of art. Miniature statues of reclining nudes line a shelf; a bust of a young boy smiles proudly from the bay window; a cabinet filled with tiny figures hangs beside a portrait of a stern Russian-looking man. The arts are something the Mattsons exposed their five children to early on and it’s stuck with them. And last week, the Arts Council of Greater Lansing honored Joan and Jerry Mattson with the Applause Award, given annually to individuals who are seen as leaders in the Lansing-area arts scene.

Curtain Call

City Pulse theater reviewers take on Riverwalk Theatre’s “White Christmas,” Williamston Theatre’s “Over the River and Through the Woods,” and “Ghost the Musical,” which premiered at the Wharton Center on Tuesday night.
