The Gig Report

A roundup of concerts coming to Lansing this weekend

by Hannah Scott
Thursday, Sept. 20 — Here’s a sampling of shows happening in Lansing over the next few days. Also check out this week's edition of Turn it Down, a local music column that appears weekly in City Pulse, for other live-and-loud gigs happening across mid-Michigan.

Strange Arrangement at The Loft

Since Strange Arrangement formed in 1996 the band has been recording jam rock heavily influenced by Steely Dan and The Grateful Dead, with an occasional deviation into 80’s synth sounds. Strange Arrangement was named the Home Grown Music Network’s “Artist of the Year” in 2011, and Jamband.com recently listed their spring sampler album as #8 on their top 25 Jamband list. Based out of Chicago, Strange Arrangement is composed of Joe Hettinga (keyboard, vocals), Steve Sinde (drums, vocals), Jim Conry (guitar, vocals), and Kevin Barry (bass, vocals). Also performing Thursday will be electronic/funk fusion group Eumatik, a trio specializing in melting modern and vintage music technology. Eumatik is Josh Lockwood (keyboard, laptop), Ashton Kleemann (keyboard), and Derek Shelton (drums).

Thursday, Sept. 20 @ The Loft, 414 East Michigan Ave., Lansing. 18 and Over. $8 advance, $10 at door, 7 pm.

Woody Guthrie’s 100th Birthday Celebration at Unitarian Universalist Church

Courtesy of Ten Pound Fiddle concert series, Josh Davis, Jen Sygit, Drew Howard, Cindy Morgan, and Jim Hal will be performing their favorites by the influential folk legend Woody Guthrie. This will be a true 100th birthday party for Guthrie with cake and a giant card for all attendees to sign, which will be sent to Guthrie’s daughter. All ages are welcome to the party.

Friday, Sept. 21 @ Unitarian Universalist Church, 855 Grove St., East Lansing, MI. All ages. $15 public, $12 Ten Pound Fiddle members, $5 students, 8 pm.

Steppin’ in it at The Green Door

Lansing’s dependable American roots sextet ‘Steppin’ in it’ plays its weekly gig Monday at The Green Door. The group is stacked with skilled Americana and blues musicians, including Joshua Davis (composer, guitar, vocals), Dominic John Suchyta (upright bass), Joe Wilson (steel guitar, trombone), Andy Wilson (harmonica, trumpet, Cajun accordian), Mike Lynch (organ, accordion, clavinet), and John Cassidy (drums). The band plays a mix of original and some covers, all painting a vivid portrait of American folk, country, and blues traditions.

Monday, Sept 24 @ The Green Door, 2005 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. 21 and over, 9:30 pm.
