Go 'Behind the Facade' Saturday

Learn about the major architects who designed some of the city's most distinctive buildings during a Historical Society of Greater Lansing tour on Saturday

by City Pulse Staff

Friday, June 15 —  Historical Society of Greater Lansing president Valerie Marvin leads a tour of many of the downtown area's most architecturally significant buildings from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The tour is free and takes place rain or shine.

The tour begins at the corner of Washington and Michigan Avenues, and includes stops at the former Lieberman's gift shop, which was designed by George Nelson, as well as the Ranney Building designed by Darius Moon. Other notable locations include the former Knapps department store, the Boji Tower (once known as the Olds Tower), the Foster Swift law offices (once the home of Lansing Home Dairy), the Hollister Building and the Atrium Office Center, which was once the location of the Michigan Theatre and the Strand Theatre. Marvin will be pointing out the
architectural styles that are represented in each building, such as Art Deco, Romanesque, Streamline Moderne and Beaux Arts.

“These buildings represent the best of preservation and each represents a particular time in our city’s and nation’s history," Marvin said in a press release. "If you understand the evolution of these buildings you understand how national trends were played out locally.” The annual meeting of the Society will be held immediately following at Michigan Brewing Co. in downtown Lansing.
